Since opening in June 2019 mothermother has grown slowly and steadily from our wharemahi LOT23 in Tāmaki Makaurau.
mothermother is an artist-run initiative with an inclusive kaupapa that offers support and visibility to our 30+ strong artists. We have presented 24 exhibitions, held a booth at the last three Aoteoroa Art Fairs, a feminist potluck dinner at Adam Art Gallery Te Pataka Toi, a solo presentation at the Sluice biennale in Europe and our significant group show at Northart pubic art gallery. We hold a strong focus on supporting local artists, and we also celebrate growing connections outside Tāmaki Makaurau.
mothermother promotes underrepresented artists and challenges hierarchical curatorial methods by elevating the unity of a healthy network. A stable future for all depends on it. Knowledge is held by the greater group and curatorial functions are enacted through the network.
mothermother artists are not necessarily biological mothers, but rather embody a kaupapa of manaakitanga, caretaking, and support for those who identify with the struggle of being fundamentally overlooked and under-valued as artists in a society that favours a male perspective.
‘mOther’, ‘muth’ : other, emergent, re-emergent, transitioning.

We acknowledge our muthas before us, in particular; Femisphere and Fiona Jack’s ‘Issues of Representation’ text, which were both inspiring forces for this project. We aim to reveal the interconnected networks that support and sustain us, the bodily connections we hold to the land, our societies, each other and our futures.
We acknowledge that it is an ongoing journey of our network to deepen our knowledge and response to the history, impacts, and contemporary importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
All welcome, haere mai!
